Bed-wetting

Consequences for the child

Wetting the bed may have a negative psychological impact on the child:

• The child may have a hard time concentrating in school.

• The child may develop inferiority feelings.

• The child may have poor self-esteem.

The child feels he's being punished by liquid restrictions after supper.

The child doesn't experience restorative sleep since he knows beforehand that he will wet the bed. In most cases, he sleeps very soundly.

The child avoids summer camp and sleepovers with friends because he fears his friends will become aware of his bed-wetting problem. He's afraid of becoming the laughing stock of his peers.

Bed-wetting soon becomes a family problem; parents have the added task of changing sheets and sometimes become irritable because their sleep is interrupted by the crying child who wakes them after wetting the bed.

In addition to being costly, wearing a diaper (absorbent briefs) doesn't really solve the problem.
